The 5 best viewpoints in Douro
Portugal is home to a vast number of extremely beautiful natural landscapes, but the Douro Wine Region is one of the most beautiful in the country. This landscape of natural splendour is characterized by the winding Douro River and the photogenic terraces that line its banks.
Those slopes are the result of the perfect harmony between nature and the hard work of man, who has transformed these soils over the generations in order to cultivate the unique grapes that eventually give rise to the world-famous Port wine.
In order to contemplate these wonders, various viewpoints have been built to provide breathtaking views over the impressive slopes of the Douro river and, in our opinion, these are some of the best to visit:
Teixeirô Viewpoint (Cinfães)
GPS Coordinates: 41.08654692875405, -8.084971638859473
In Cinfães you’ll find the Teixeirô viewpoint, known for its unique view over the exact spot where the Bestança river flows into the great Douro. You can also see various points of interest between Baião and Cinfães from the top of the viewpoint, such as the Pala reservoir, the Portuguese villages of Porto Manso and Boassas, the Mosteirô Bridge and the Porto Old Pier.
Also, worthy of note in Cinfães is the Bestança Swing, a unique attraction in this romantic setting. This tourist attraction wins the hearts of thousands of visitors every year due to the privileged view it offers over the clear waters of the Bestança river, one of the clearest rivers in the whole of Europe, and the surrounding natural landscape.
Note: although this swing is a true-hidden paradise, its location by the river means that access to it can be a little tricky, so we recommend wearing comfortable footwear that can be utilised in the water.
In addition to the attractions already mentioned, Cinfães offers many other noteworthy sites that could be mentioned in this text. However, while visiting Cinfães, we highly recommend taking the time to enjoy a picnic at Barrondes Leisure Park or Nossa Senhora de Lurdes Park—two spots you won't want to miss.

From the viewpoint, your eyes are treated to a vast horizon, intricately adorned with vineyards that blanket the rolling slopes. With a magnificent view over the Douro river, the Valeira Dam and the surrounding landscape with steep, rugged slopes that contrast with the vineyards, olive groves and orchards, the São Salvador do Mundo viewpoint in São João da Pesqueira is one of the most visited viewpoints in the Douro region.
Near to the viewpoint, you can find 10 hermitages (small temples), most of them from the 16th century, which make up the Steps of the Passion of Christ and where a beautiful and symbolic pilgrimage takes place on Corpus Christi. The viewpoint is traditionally sought after by girls looking to get married and, according to legend, by tying the knot in the broom trees there, they will easily find a good match.
Apart from the legends associated with it, the viewpoint is an optimal place to visit for its stunning scenery and nearby points of interest. One of the places you can see from the viewpoint is Cachão da Valeira, an ancient waterfall in a rocky gorge in the Douro river that was a natural barrier separating the High Douro from the Douro Superior. You can also see Ferradosa and the site of the old railway bridge. The scenery provided by the São Salvador do Mundo viewpoint is certainly different from the others on this list, and therefore deserves a place in this selection.
